My internship allowed me the privilege of composing Facebook messages on the MedStar Harbor Hospital Facebook page. The Facebook page is open to the general public, therefore, the messages I composed needed to relate to the healthcare field, but targeted for a general audience composed mainly of adults concerned about health problems.
The Facebook posts always link to an external site, usually in relation to MedStar Harbor. The Facebook messages needed to be brief, yet provide enough information to draw in an audience. Too much text, however, draws away Facebook users from reading the entire Facebook post. The purpose of the Facebook page is used to reach a wider audience than the MedStar Harbor's website reaches. The Twitter page is also used for similar reasons: to reach a wider audience than the website and the Facebook page would reach. The Twitter page is used to keep followers updated on different events and classes the hospital offers. Both social media tools incorporate external links to the Maryland Gazette health articles that further describe a health topic.
